School's Out...

...for the next three weeks. I can't believe that nine weeks have already flown by and Kate is now tracked out. Of course, Kate is excited to have a break. And for the most part, I'm happy about it.

Let's look at the pros:

  1. Bryan doesn't have to wake up early to get her to school. I have to share this about my hubby. On Sunday night, Bryan told Kate at 9pm that she really needed to get to bed because she was going to be tired in the morning. All of a sudden, it was like a light bulb went off, when he screamed with enthusiasm (yes, my hubby can exhibit this on occasion), "Yesssss!! I don't have to take her to school tomorrow". It was really quite adorable and I felt happy for him.
  2. Neither Bryan nor I have to pack her lunch every day. I am NOT a morning person, so I would always pack her lunch after the kids went to bed. It was just another thing that had to be accomplished before I got to sit down for the night and say "ahhhhh".
  3. NO HOMEWORK. Honestly, that should have been #1.
  4. I don't have to lay out her clothes every night. At what age do you let kids start picking out their own clothes to wear to school? And that doesn't mean "when are they able to" but "when do we let them"? I'm not sure my child could match a shirt and a pair of shorts--you know what I'm sayin'?
  5. I don't have to fill out paperwork/homework forms at night.
  6. I get to spend some mommy-daughter time with my precious 6 year old, Kate. I absolutely love the little person that she is becoming and I can't wait to have her around the house.
  7. Did I mention NO HOMEWORK. That means we don't HAVE to read for 15 minutes every day. This was a major stress because it ended up being a 45 minute reading session everyday and I am happy to not have that in my life for 3 weeks. Yahoo!

So, what are the cons?

  1. Bryan doesn't have to wake up as early to get her to school. This is a pro for Bryan, but a con for me. This morning, Bryan didn't get up until later. I believe that it was late enough that my toddler boy heard his Daddy, and therefore woke up. He usually sleeps until 9am (I know I am lucky). This morning he was up by 8:15 or so. I hope this is not the trend for the rest of the track out. It's only 30-45 minutes, but I sure have enjoyed that extra sleep.
  2. I have to figure out what to feed 2 hungry kids for lunch each day...at the same time. This really isn't all that stressful, especially if Chick-fil-a or McDonald's is open for business. However, today I felt like I was constantly going to the frig or the pantry to get someone a drink or a snack.
  3. While we don't have homework, Kate's teacher did send home some "extra" homework for track-out that was optional. Of course, this over-achiever feels it her duty to make sure her offspring complete any and all work thrown her way. So, yes folks, even on day#1, I made Kate do some math problems. Okay, so it was only 3 word problems, but still....
  4. Sibling rivalry. It's in full swing....well maybe only half-swing. My children never had any problems getting along because they never played with each other. Now that they have STARTED playing with each other, S.R. has reared its ugly head in the Sherman household.
  5. The "M" word. I love Katelyn more than life. You know I do. But she has a bad habit of calling me for any and everything. I'm not kidding. If it was a speck of dirt on the window, she would call me in to see it. And when she calls my name...it's always long and drawn-out. "Mmmaaaammmmmmaaaaa". By the end of the day, I physically cringe when I hear it. I'm trying something new this track-out. I told her that she has twenty "mamas" a day...so use them wisely.
  6. Aaron has decided that he doesn't need naps everyday. I don't know if this is a stage or not, but I really hope he decides to try harder. Mama needs Aaron to nap so that she can have a break.
All this to say that I'm looking forward to my time with Kate, and I hope that we get to do some fun things over the break. This past weekend was a great start...we played games with our two favorite neighborhood families: the Williamsons and the Riveras. And after church on Sunday, Kelsey flat-ironed Kate's hair to match hers. Then the three of us headed to the library to get books. I'm on a library kick lately. I can't get ENOUGH...children's books, that is. Hee hee.

Here's a couple of pics of the two straight-haired beauties:

As always, as a long distance grandma, I am very touched when I visit your blog and catch up with what is going on with all of you. I remember that when I reached the point of hearing "Mama," a few too many times, I would tell Bryan and Alden, "Call me Marian for the rest of the day." "I can't hear 'Mama' one more time!"
