Lean On Me...

Growing up, I had 2 sisters-one younger & one older. Although I know we had our rough times, especially during the teenage years, I can honestly say that I enjoyed having them around for my 'growing up' years. And now, several years later, with a family of my own, I consider both of them my closest friends. We have always been there for each other and that is what counts.

That said, I really don't know what to expect from a 'brother/sister' relationship. I mean, Bryan only has one brother, so neither of us grew up with a sibling of the opposite sex. Kate is 3 1/2 years older than Aaron. That's a big age difference, and until now, Kate has pretty much ignored Aaron. It's been exciting to see how their relationship is slowly changing.

Right before this track-out, I noticed that the two of them were talking more and playing together. It's been fun to watch Katelyn interact with her younger brother. She thinks the things he says are "so cute" and she can be his biggest fan ("Mom, Aaron just said his ABC's...good job, Aaron"). It's almost like she has hit a new level of maturity, and therefore can reach out to her brother. I hope this trend continues.

Aaron is also becoming a bit protective of his older sister. The other day, when he thought his Daddy (who he loves more than anyone) had done something to hurt Kate, Aaron hauled off and hit Bryan. Of course, we couldn't encourage this behavior from our son, but I was pretty impressed that he cared enough for his sister to stand up for her. And just today, when Kate got upset at something that she saw on a video clip, and was sobbing on my shoulder, Aaron came over and crammed a goldfish in her mouth. It actually worked. Kate started to laugh, and Aaron smiled. He was worried about her and wanted to make her happy.

I know this won't be how it is always, but for this week, I am celebrating my son and daughter, and their budding relationship. I love them both and hope they can find a lifelong friend in each other.

...and just for the record, Kate started crying because she had either done something to hurt herself or had been told that it was bedtime or time to go home and I just happened to be nearby. You should have seen the look he gave me before hitting me. Hopefully he will be that protective when she starts dating.
